PROJECT SUMMARY
Gadgeon Smart Systems, Inc. provides engineering & development support services to a medical tech solutions company. They staff their own projects, many of which are cloud-based.
BACKGROUND
Introduce your business & what you do there.
I’m the Founder & President of a company that produces medical device hardware, firmware, cloud resources & mobile apps.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Gadgeon Smart Systems Inc?
They expand my engineering resources with embedded firmware in addition to cloud & mobile app development.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
They’re working in tandem with me. I serve as the project lead & they’re my engineering team. We’re often creating low-power wireless solutions, connected solutions & wearable devices. They’re often connected to the cloud, but we’ve built a broad spectrum of medical devices. We work on equipment both used in & out of the body, as well as life sciences lab equipment.
They staff their projects on their end the majority of the time. Otherwise, there’s a senior-level project manager that I trust to select the right resources for the team.
WHAT IS THE TEAM COMPOSITION?
The senior tech lead is my main point of contact there, but I do interact with the engineers that I’m working with on a specific project. Typically, I talk to the lead about proposals. He’ll run day-to-day with their team & report to me. He operates as a salaried employee for me. We’ve had 4–12 engineers working on our projects at any given time.
HOW DID YOU COME TO WORK WITH GADGEON?
I found them on Upwork, where I worked with them on one project. We then took the discussion outside of the platform & continued collaborating.
WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THE ENGAGEMENT?
We started collaborating in 2014 & our projects are ongoing.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
I continue to collaborate with them because of their high-quality abilities & organization. They’ve adapted well to our process & structure. Since we’re working in a highly regulated field, there are many additional product requirements to adhere to.
They came up to speed very quickly on the documentation & testing that’s required by the FDA. Because of that, I can give them autonomy. They make wise decisions & often over-deliver on our requirements, making sure their work is refined.
How did Gadgeon Smart Systems Inc. perform from a project management standpoint?
We use Trello to manage projects & Jira from a quality & regulatory standpoint. That allows us to manage bug & issue tracking.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They take ownership of projects, going above & beyond to make sure the product is right for our team. Their work is always effective, robust & useful because of that.
Are there any areas they could improve?
It would be helpful to have tools that would allow us to share our progress with customers clearly. However, I have no complaints about their production. Increased visibility would just be beneficial.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Set your expectations. That will make it easier for their engineers to complete tasks because it provides process & structure to the development. In those cases, they’re able to execute well.
